Abstract

The Smart Work Zone is a portable traffic management system designed for use in a construction work zone environment. Using wireless communication techniques, the system provides real time video and traffic data from the work zone to a traffic control center. The traffic control center can be either a computer system set up in a construction trailer or it can be integrated into an existing permanent Traffic Management Center. Information can be relayed to the motorist via changeable message signs or radio traffic reports. The system has undergone operational testing at two sites in the Minneapolis metropolitan area. It is also currently being implemented as a contract bid item by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Evaluation results indicate that the system is an effective tool for improving the safety and efficiency of construction work zones.
