Abstract

The arterial network and traffic analysis zones (TAZ) for a hypothetical city are created and entered into suitable TransCAD format. Traffic volumes on arterials and at intersections are generated every five minutes during the morning peak hour using a Hypothetically Intelligent Vehicular Entity (HIVE) model. Traffic congestion "hotspots" are viewed as the traffic propagates through the network over time. Several alleviation measures such as signal timings, speed limits, and increased arterial capacity were analyzed using the snapshot approach. Applications of the snapshot approach are successfully demonstrated for several potential trip generators which are hypothetically "plugged in" to the "plugged in" to the existing network. These include a shopping mall, a theatre, and a stadium in which large volumes of traffic are suddenly or gradually drawn from or released into the arterial network. (A)
