Abstract

A study has recently been completed into possible ways of using the embankment of the ring railway around Amsterdam to improve public transport connections between the surrounding region and the city's peripheral areas, in particular the sub-centres in the periphery. Both trains and trams have been considered for this purpose. A direct line between Sloterdijk Station and Southeast Amsterdam was found to be a valuable link in the connection between the region and the sub-centres, and from one peripheral area to another. A condition for the success of such a link is a frequent service, which can be realised most effectively by light rail.
