Abstract

The southern part of the Randstad is highly urbanized. The region between Rotterdam and The Hague will be transformed from rural to suburban the next 30 years. To prevent congestion of car- traffic a regional railway system is needed. The present railway lines end at the central stations. When these lines would penetrate deeper into the urban area, the modal split would shift to transit. Plans are developed to realize this.
