Sobriety testing : intoxilyzers and listerine antiseptic.

Abstract

The procedure and results are described of a study of the potential of mouthwash products (which contain alcohol) to interfere with breath alcohol detection units. The effect of Listerine Antiseptic on the CMI Intoxilyzer was measured for seven volunteers. Ratings on Intoxilyzer were made initially, and at one-, three-, five-, and ten-minute intervals after completion of rinsing with Listerine Antiseptic. It was found that the highest level of alcohol was present at the one-minute rating period. A decreased though significant level of alcohol was present five minutes after rinsing with the Antiseptic. No significant level of alcohol was present at the final rating period conducted 10 minutes after the rinsing. Thus Listerine Antiseptic, containing 26.9% alcohol, has no effect of Intoxilyzer ratings following a 10-minute observation period. (Author/Publisher)
