Abstract

This paper examines the value of including within environmental assessment a separate assessment of the effects on the community. The paper is divided into four sections: an introduction describing the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) and the overall role and approach taken to the environmental assessment of its effects; a brief description of the role of social impact assessment overseas; an examination of the community effects assessment undertaken for the CTRL and a discussion of value and the future role of such work within the UK.
