Abstract

The Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research SWOV was asked to make a preliminary literature review for a cycle track in the second Benelux-tunnel. Emphasis should be given to the personal safety. Should personal safety be an argument for not constructing a cycle tunnel and to make other provisions such as a ferry boat and/or provisions for bicycles on buses? What should be the effect of personal safety on the use of a cycle tunnel and how can personal safety be increased? Given the starting point of the policy and the importance of its succeeding specifications are presented for a extensive literature review into the aspects of personal safety as an influencing factor on alternative transport modes in its relationship to the offer of alternative routes.
