Abstract

The development of road transport has facilitated trade and improved the movement of people and goods. Inappropriately designed transport systems can damage the environment and threaten individual safety. The economic efficiency of roads and the impact of roads on social cohesion and integration are considered. The economic impact of road transport investments is discussed. The effects of the road sector on other sectors of the economy and on public finances are considered. The role of road transport as a major employer and as a basic provider of accessibility is examined. The relationships between transport and poverty are discussed.
