Abstract

The Association of Electronic Technology for Automobile Traffic and Driving (JSK) will conduct large-scale operational tests to examine the social and economical impacts of applying intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies to electric vehicle (EV) systems. Based on preliminary research, two EV systems are proposed: "Urban EV Rental system" and "EV-Sharing system". The "Urban EV Rental system" serves the workers in a business district who make frequent short trips from/to transit stations; and the "EV-Sharing system" serves the daytime residents of a residential district who make frequent short trips to stores, schools, and stations. This three-phase study on practicality of EV systems started in 1997 and the first operational test began in October 1999. This paper introduces efforts to further understand how ITS technologies should be applied to enhance and complement the EV's characteristics. (A*)
