The Association of Electronic Technology for Automobile Traffic and Driving (JSK) has been researching and developing electric vehicle-sharing systems since 1998, based on the application of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technologies. One of these systems is the Urban EV Rental System, which underwent operational testing in a demonstration that was launched in September 1999 in Yokohama's Minato Mirai 21 (MM21) district. Another system is the Second Car System for Residential Area Use, which also underwent operational testing in a demonstration in the Inagi district of Tama New Town in the western suburbs of Tokyo. This paper describes the results of the demonstration of the Urban EV Rental System, which is designed for shared vehicle use on weekdays by business people working in the downtown area and on weekends and holidays by hotel guests and sightseers.
