Abstract

After details of the four provinces, rural road network, total population and vehicle ownerschip of South Africa, the four main population groups: Europeans (whites), Africans (Bantu), Coloreds and Asians are described, and data on the cultural background and socio-economic characteristics of each group are given. Statistics are presented on (1) fatalities by population group and type of road user, and (2) fatalities per million of population in each population group for 1970.
