Abstract

Road freight traffic can be broadly classified in two ways (1) long and short distance road freight and (2) own account operation and public haulage. For longdistance freight, whether carried by own account operator or by public haulier, only a limited number of destinations in generally to be visited. In contrasts for short distance freight the problem is usually to service a large number of customers. Computer programs based on algorithms for planning routing and scheduling are discussed.
