Abstract

The theoretical aspects of a control system based on the relative velocity follower, for which the acceleration of the following car is proportional to the time rate at which the gap between it and the car immediately ahead is increasing have been studied. The stability of traffic flow under these conditions has been investigated, and the minimum spacing of vehicles for stable conditions has been determined spacing of vehicles for stable conditions has been observed, and their rate of progression was measured. Field data obtained by aerial surveys have been used to test the theory of traffic flow on long crowded roads and to test the model on the stability of traffic flow with relative velocity control.
