Some characteristics of walking and cycling as travel modes.

Abstract

In the past, much of the work on walking and cycling has concentrated on safety aspects rather than on these means of non-motorised transport as travel modes. This paper collates published information which includes aspects such as mode share, lengths of bicycle and walking trips, influence of age and gender, city-to-city comparisons of participation rates, and the factors which appear to influence bicycle and pedestrian usage. Factors considered include residential density, household income, climate, weather and cultural factors. A common feature of many scenarios for sustainable cities is the call for a much greater share of person trips to be taken by bike or on foot. This paper comments on the implications of the data for planning new development on the urban fringe. (A)
