Abstract

Countries can be defined by several characteristics. Air-, train- and car-traffic characteristics of the twelve member states of the European Community have been studied, dependent on a number of variables like population size, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and infrastructure characteristics. The number of cars and the number of railway passengers can well be explained by GDP per capita. The number of scheduled air trips, on the other hand, is not income elastic. The supply in infrastructure is sufficient for rail traffic. For car traffic and especially air traffic, congestion becomes a serious problem if roads and airports are not improved at a faster pace than currently planned. The United Kingdom and Spain seem to be the countries where those problems are most imminent.
