Abstract

A timely start of salting as a result of an ice early- warning system helps the maintenance staff while avoiding premature salting. The ice early- warning system presented here is based on detection of road (and ambient) temperature and road wetness (caused by condensation, sublimation or precipitation). The outstations of the system transmit their data to the central computer out of the area, which will alarm the operator when conditions tend to become dangerous and there is no longer sufficient salt on the road- surface.
