Abstract

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER IS TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE SERIOUS ACCIDENT SITUATIONS THAT EXIST AT SOME RURAL INTERSECTIONS AND CONSEQUENTLY SUGGEST GUIDELINES FOR EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS TO MINIMISE THESE PROBLEMS. THE PAPER DISCUSSES THE FEATURES OF THE BASIC INTERSECTION TYPES THEN PRESENTS AN ACCIDENT STUDY UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THEIR RELATIVE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE. THE CONCLUSIONS OF THIS STUDY HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED IN THE FORMULATION OF GUIDELINES FOR THE MODIFICATION OF EXISTING INTERSECTIONS AND THE DESIGN OF NEW ONES. THE MAJOR CONCLUSION OF THE STUDY IS THAT GREAT COMMUNITY BENEFITS COULD BE ACHIEVED BY ELIMINATING FOUR-WAY INTERSECTIONS WHERE THE CROSS ROADS CARRY A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF STRAIGHT THROUGH TRAFFIC ON EACH ROAD.
