The paper briefly describes the systems that have existed for the last twenty years in Great Britain for the collection of data on road traffic and personal travel. The uses of exposure data are discussed and examples are given to compare the level of road safety in different regions of the United Kingdom. The two major sources of data are the National Road Traffic Survey and the National Travel Survey. The traffic survey provides details of the total traffic flow on the national road network. Traffic volumes are estimated by vehicle type and type of road. The travel survey provides the only national source of travel information by all modes, linking different kinds of travel with the characteristics of travellers and their families. The average distance travelled by mode and journeys per person by age and sex and mode are considered.
