Abstract

In January 2006, the Bavarian State Minister of the Interior signed a contract for the founding of the privately operated Verkehrsinformationsagentur Bayern (VIB, the Bavarian Traffic Information Agency). The aim is to provide reliable information to travellers regardless of mode of travel. The VIB was developed from the Bavarian Board of Building and Public Works internet-based information service BAYERNINFO as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to pass on the information to the consumer. Details are given of the development of VIB, which is based on the INTREST geo-referencing system. VIB will provide basic information services on the current and predicted traffic status on Bavarian networks as a free-of-charge service. A three-level travel-time model will be developed. The most basic layer will offer travel time predictions based on the static network geometry. The second layer will have semi-dynamic information e.g. road works and weather. The third layer will have real-time traffic data. The VIB will be able to use traffic data provided by the public sector for chargeable services.
