Abstract

Fast speed caused by brake failure especially of heavy vehicles driving on long downslopes leads to fatal accidents. A higher number of this sort of accident depends on high density of heavy vehicles and long and steep downslopes. These accidents are very dangerous not only for people in vehicles, but also for people in the vicinity. The most frequent types of these accidents are run off the road, driving on the opposite carriageway, and collision with pedestrians. Escape lanes are a very useful tool to prevent these accidents. Now, we have experiences from four escape lanes, which have been built in the Czech Republic. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123193.
