The specification of epoxy coated reinforcement bars.

Abstract

Epoxy coated reinforcing bars give improved performance when exposed to corrosive environments but there is no British Standard for this product and the ASTM 775 M (1984) standard is too domestically oriented to be applicable outside of North America. The requirements to produce a specification for use in the UK and the intrinsic inadequacies of ASTM 775 M are discussed. The main technical problems are the measurement of coating thickness and the unrealistically low demands of the bar bending test. The other tests listed in the American Standard such as bond strength to concrete, chemical resistance, impact and hardness, could be transposed to British Standard test procedures without too much difficulty.
