A study has been conducted, involving the specification, testing and implementation of a SPOT traffic control system at a major traffic entry point to the city of Stockholm. The aim of the study has been to assess the potential of new traffic signal control systems and how different control philosophies can influence traffic flows in and around Stockholm. Preliminary results from simulations suggest economic benefits are available, as a result of improved traffic signal control. Field trials of SPOT have shown a significant re-distribution of traffic in the study area, which may be acceptable from an optimisation point of view but not from a political one. The project has highlighted the essential requirement for thorough testing, simulation and fine-tuning of new signal control strategies prior to implementation.
