Abstract

Accidentology is a young science and has hitherto been dominated by a pragmatic approach, especially in the realm of evaluation. It seemed an interesting idea to compare it with evaluation practices in the field of medical epidemiology. If one accepts that conclusions can only be inferred if assumptions of general application are shown to hold true, then road safety research has to concentrate its attention on the explicative etiology of accidents which is the ultimate criterion of methods of evaluation.
