Abstract

The use of spectral analysis to reveal repetitive features in day and night fatal highway accidents is shown by an application of this technique to the Michigan fatal accident record for the 1969 calendar year. Time series of fatal accidents by day, week and month are used to demonstrate the ability of this technique, to determine frequencies in the data and to rank these frequencies in terms of their amplitude or spectral strength. The technique may have value in locating accident patterns which might otherwise escape observation.
