Abstract

This paper addresses New Zealand's road safety situation and shows that New Zealand has followed unfavourable trends when comparisons are made with other developed countries. A comprehensive speed management strategy is outlined which could be implemented with relatively small resources. This strategy involves: (1) more efficient enforcement of speed limits; (2) more deterrant penalties for speeding, and (3) a rational speed limit regime.
