Abstract

This paper sets out the speed management strategy approved by the Cabinet Member for Strategic Environmental Services and adopted by West Sussex County Council in the UK in August 2000. The strategy aims at encouraging drivers to drive at appropriate speeds, developing community support for speed limits, reducing excessive speeds, and expanding the use of camera technology in enforcement. The speed management strategy will integrate actions on speed management with the new casualty reduction strategy and targets for 2010, reduce danger for vulnerable road users, introduce a maximum 40 mph speed limit in rural villages and change driver attitudes through education, engineering and enforcement. The proposals included in the response sent to the Department of Transport, the Environment and the Regions as part of the national consultation process on the National Speed Policy Review are listed.
