Abstract

This paper reports on the effect of road engineering measures on speeds at selected locations within four of the urban safety project areas (Sheffield, Bristol, Bradford and Nelson). Speed measurements were taken. A variety of measures were introduced as part of the Project which might affect vehicle speeds. Most effective in reducing the number of vehicles travelling at high speeds were the proximity of roundabouts or severe narrowing of the carriageway coupled with weaving of the centre line. Central refuges with lane markings did not have a consistent effect on speeds, with both increases and decreases being observed.
