Speed of passenger cars on grades.

Abstract

Calculations and graphs are presented, relating the speed of a passenger vehicle to the road gradient according to the parameters of the former. It is shown that vehicle weight and net engine power are the dominant parameters, whereas rolling friction, the aerodynamic drag coefficient, and the drag surface are of secondary importance. These findings justify revision of existing road-design standards, especially in terms of design speed, visibility range in overtaking, gradients, etc.
