Abstract

The Federal Republic of Germany is the only country in the whole of Europe without a general speed limit on motorways. By law, 130 km /h is the recommended speed limit on about 80% of all motorway sections: the other 20% have speed limits. The Federal government rejected and still rejects any proposal for introducing a speed limit on motorways. This is so in spite of the fact that not only the average values of the speeds but also the higher values are increasing continuously.
