Abstract

A survey of speeds of cars on motorways in England in 1970 and 1973 has been carried out using the two-speed method. The upward trend of speeds of cars on motorways continue, with a rise of 2½ mile/hour between 1970 and 1973, but there is some indication that the spread of speeds reduced. The average speed of cars on motorways in 1973 was 66½ mile/hour, with 36% exceeding 70 mile/hour.
