Abstract

Environmental leadership takes various forms of preserving and protecting a community's resources. Transportation experts, professional planners, environmental engineers, naturalists, historical societies, and keepers of cultural integrity are learning to work more cooperatively when roadways need to be expanded or modified. Several southern states recently gathered in May 2003, in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the 2003 Southern Environmental Leadership Summit to share information relating to the more efficient management of highway networks. This article provides an overview of the main issues discussed at the Summit.
