Abstract

The sounds of the environment are not always annoying and dysfunctional. On the contrary, many sounds are pleasant and /or provide us vital information: for example they alarm us, enrich spatial and climatic experience, provide us a sense of time and season, permit social contact and so on. The urban designer should be able to make use of those positive aspects in the process of planning.
