This paper provides a general progress report on the preparation of standards for Road Traffic and Transport Telematics (RTTT). The aim of the standardisation process here is to promote the development of RTTT by preparing a coherent set of standards at a European level. In particular, these standards should focus on providing compatibility and interoperability, both within an application (or service) and between applications, to allow and encourage a multivendor situation. The relevant European standards bodies are CEN, for general standards including those for information technology (IT), CENELEC for electro-technical standards, and ETSI for telecommunications standards. The corresponding international standards bodies are ISO, IEC, and ITU/CCITT. In RTTT, standards are required to identify and define common interfaces (e.g. road-vehicle communications), databases (e.g. digital maps), definitions (e.g. terms used), and data elements (e.g. traffic messages). The activities of several relevant standards working groups in these areas are outlined, together with work on standards for road traffic equipment, standards and system architecture, and standards and the deployment of RTTT. Some relevant British standards and drafted for development are listed.
