Abstract

The current traffic situation in Japan is described briefly. Some of the issues facing the automotive industry in respect to energy conservation are then described as are the steps that have been taken to solve them. Specific topics include air quality, traffic congestion, traffic safety and roadside noise. The major efforts being made to improve energy efficiency in land transportation are then outlined.
