Abstract

In recent years, the Korean government, specifically Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT), has put a lot of effort into implementing ITS in Korea. The strategic plan for ITS in Korea was established in August 1996. Based on the strategic plan, the first large-scale operational test, focusing on APTS (Advanced Public Transportation System) and ATIS (Advanced Traveller Information System), is under way in the city of Kwacheon, where the government office buildings are located. This paper focuses on introducing ITS activities, and describes the current status of preparation for the ITS showcase at the 1998 ITS World Congress in Seoul, Korea. Nine state-of-the-art systems are under construction, and these are grouped as four major components of ITS. The areas of ATMS (Advanced Traffic Management System), Adaptive Signal Control System, Electronic Toll Collection, and Automatic Enforcement System are to be tested. Dynamic Route Guidance System, Parking Information System, and Real-Time Broadcasting System are to be tested for ATIS purposes. For CVO, Weigh In Motion will be operated. The Passenger Information System for bus transport will be tested for APTS operational testing.
