Abstract

The "Directie Individueel Personenvervoer" of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management have made it their aim to realize, within a period of a few years, a measurable improvement in the quality of traffic information for the (potential) users of the interurban network. Traffic information is understood to be: information or advice which is understandable to the public and which relates to the (present or future) situation on the road(s) or concerning the road(s), as well as to other matters relevant to traffic, like the weather, diversions, final (tourist) destinations, events, ferry services, parking places, P&R, and if necessary, public transport. INRO-TNO received a commission to draw up a state-of-the-art overview of the possibilities that systems offer to gather this traffic information. Questions at issue are reliability, linking possibilities, costs and efforts.
