Abstract

The VICS, which provides real time road traffic information such as congestion and traffic regulations to on-board systems such as in-car navigation systems, commenced service on ordinary roads and expressways in the Tokyo area and the Tomei and the Meishin Expressways in April 1996. Since then, the serviced areas have gradually expanded to the Osaka area, Nagoya area, and to the expressways across the country, and strong efforts are being made to improve the level of service. This report presents an outline of VICS, discloses technical information for the development of on-board systems which display the information supplied, along with an outline of the testing implemented for development. At the same time, it also presents the situation after operations have been commenced, together with the number of units and functions of in-vehicle units.
