Selected topics on control chart theory are developed, especially as they relate to interpreting traffic accident data. Among these topics are the statistical confidence interval on accident loss expectation, the underlying logic of control charts, the estimation of accidents loss expectation, the choice of one-side or two-sided confidence intervals, the specification of control chart parameters a unified procedure for designing a control chart system for a particular application, and finally control charts as applied to accident rates in contrast to raw accidents totals.
