Abstract

The authors discuss the application of statistical analysis to traffic engineering. Statistical methods are explained and examples are given which show their use in the solution of traffic problems. Statistical methods are developed through the derivation and explanation of mathematical and statistical probability formulas and their application to the solution of typical traffic problems. The following chapters discuss the necessary theory and outline techniques for the solution of traffic problems: 1) the nature and utility of statistics, 2) summarizing data, 3) probability and probability distribution, 4) fundamentals of statistical inference, 5) some applications of statistical methods.
