This report contains a detailed study on accidents involving dangerous goods tanker trucks in the old federal states during the time period 1989-1991, and a comparison with the results of a previous study undertaken by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) for the years 1982-1984. The data basis is formed by the road accidents involving dangerous goods in the course of which either vehicle fittings (valves, metering instruments) or tanks were damaged, or the accidents involved the leakage of dangerous substances which had been reported to BASt. In order to assess the completeness of the data collection, the 131 dangerous goods accidents surveyed here were compared with the accidents involving the transport of water contaminated substances and the dangerous goods accidents recorded in the official road accident statistics of 1991. All three surveys revealed that the data collection on each of the accident category studied had not been complete. (A).
