Abstract

This paper looks at the use of mobile variable message signs (vms) in theimprovement of journey time reliability, congestion and incident management of the area 6 road network, UK. An initial investigation of the area 6 was carried out to discover any limiting factors before a mobile vms specification was developed. The units procured are used by the operations teamfor strategic diversions for closures lasting longer than 3 hours, by diverting traffic away from the affected areas. A secondary application was as part of their programme of usage covering maintenance, campaigns and major events informing motorists of maintenance schemes taking place.
