Abstract

The question of how motorists' route choice is influenced by improved information or control is one of the areas of driver behaviour where increased knowledge is needed. In this paper illustrations are given of the influence of some crucial factors on the motorists' possibility to use the information. Guided by these examples, recommendations are given concerning when warnings, travel time information and advice of alternative routes shall be given. Remaining knowledge gaps concerning route choice is given. Future studies that are needed in understanding the nature of route choice are identified.
