Abstract

By the increasing number of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) the capacity of service areas is more and more often insufficient. The State of Rheinland-Pfalz has to look for different solutions to meet the challenge in handlingthe capacity problem for HGV on service areas. Different components were identified by the State Road Authority Rheinland-Pfalz to increase the capacity of the existing infrastructure and optimize the available parking spaces: (1) the conventional extension of existing HGV rest areas with and without a service area, (2) application of the Telematics-Controlled Parking, (3) parking information on-site the motorways and, (4) parking information via internet. The program will be implemented within the next four years at the motorway A61 in Germany which is an important backbone of the Long-Distance-Corridor West.
