Abstract

The paper covers a brief examination of the impact which the Glasgow urban motorway in Strathclyde has had as an aid to movement and a catalyst for industrial development. The history of the scheme and the planning implications are described to take measured benefits arising from savings in time, fuel and accidents. In order to underline the role played by major highways in transportation costs, a summary is given of the initiatives taken locally, nationally and in the European setting.
