Abstract

The research project is supposed to evaluate which traffic flow optimization potential can be called up using TCS, if the feedforward control of the traffic flow carried out thus far will be turned into a feedback control mechanism. Initially, the state of the art was determined with regard to the topics traffic flow, detection, models, influencing and control engineering. Subsequently, research concerning traffic flow optimization was carried out in particular at an increased rate of capacity usage, in order to derive suitable control and command values for the regulation of the traffic flow. In derogation to the current practice, the temporal-spatial awareness of the traffic situation in the controlled and reference variables could be attested. Based upon these traffic engineering findings, an overall control loop was set up and tested by the implementation of two measures (platoon solution, congestion avoidance). The control unit design with the underlying control and manipulated variables were discussed regarding the effects on the detection for registration of controlled variables and the spectrum of measures for the implementation of the control variables. Here, too, it was initially deliberately assumed ideal scenarios, regardless of the currently practically feasible options. The requirements derived from this were structured in recommendations for action, arranged chronologically and checked for practical feasibility. Finally, a roadmap for the gradual testing and implementation of the control technology concept in traffic control was introduced. The aim of the research project was to establish an overall control loop for flow control systems as well as to develop recommendations for the transfer of the project results into practice. The introduction of control technology in the route/ traffic control can make a valuable contribution, in particular in the area of preventive measures for the platoon solution and congestion avoidance on the border between demand and capacity. Even with the currently used detection and display technology, a benefit can be generated according to simulative results. (Author/publisher)
