Abstract

Each year in South Australia over 600 cyclists are reported injured or killed. In 1984 the introduction of mandatory use of crash helmets was considered. However, without a reasonable level of voluntary use, legislation would be difficult, if not impossible, to police. Instead it was decided to undertake a task of public education and promotion concerning the desirability to wear helmets while bike riding.
