Abstract

Cranfield Institute of Technology was contracted by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) to investigate the ranges of forces that disabled drivers can exert on the primary controls of a car, and the forces and movements required to operate the primary controls of some present models. The study was undertaken over the period July 1986 to March 1989, and consisted of the following three phases: (1) search for existing data in the literature, at the assessment centres, and from car manufacturers; (2) trials of car control characteristics of some current standard models; and (3) trials assessing the strength characteristics of samples of disabled drivers.
