Abstract
Research on effective visual cues for straight road driving suggested that the cues for lateral speed are processed separately from the cues for lateral position. By manipulating environmental variables, the normally existing correlation between the cues can not be removed. A reconsideration of the process underlying the perception of apparent and real movement suggested that by using stroboscopic occlusion, perception of lateral speed can be selectively suppressed. The rationale of this method is tested.
