Abstract

This paper discusses features of distributed wireless sensor networks that would be important to their implementation towards structural health monitoring applications of bridge structures. Some of the benefits and pitfalls in attempting to introduce these techniques in everyday monitoring applications are also discussed. An example of the recent trialling of a GPS system for monitoring deck displacements of the Westgate Bridge is drawn upon in which a comparison has also been made with measurements from a traditional accelerometer-based corded system.
