Abstract

Movable bridges are unique structures due to the complex interaction between their structural, mechanical and electrical systems. These mechanisms provide versatility to movable bridges; however, their intricate interrelation also produces some operation and maintenance challenges. Deterioration, unexpected breakdowns, high maintenance cost and difficulty of repair are some of the issues related to movable bridges. In this paper, behavior of a bascule type movable bridge is studied for condition assessment alongwith experimental and analytical results. The bridge that is presented asa case study in this paper is the Sunrise Boulevard Bridge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. First, the Finite Element model (FEM) of this representative movable bridge is developed. Then, this model was compared with the field data which is obtained through the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system implemented on the Sunrise Bridge for typical responses under standard operating loads. Different types of static and dynamic analyses are conducted. The results from the FEM and field data are presented for differentcase studies in a comparative fashion. These findings are noted as threshold values for the regular operation of the bridge and deviations from these threshold values can be considered for further evaluation and additional action. Finally, load ratings are evaluated for various truck locations and results are presented.
